Walk the Talk
People are funny – we’ll drive for over 20 minutes, some for nearly 2 hours in the traffic jams, and converge on one place, to then go for a walk with 27 999 other people, only to then get back in our cars, sit in the traffic jams again, and go back home. Megan, the owner of one ordinary green pen of the ballpoint variety (which, by the way, she says has been most useful in editing her thesis!) pointed this out, and that I’m one of those funny people- I just love the vibe that so many people and their dogs can create, all jolly and laughing and promoting some kind of cause or business (as you can see by all the T-shirts- I was thinking that I should have got organised with a t-shirt that had ONEMATCHSTICK.CO.ZA all over it.) Yip, a bunch of us from Jozi7degrees went for a stroll on Sunday at the Discovery 702 Walk the Talk 2006- we did the 5 km, and what fun!
We passed Baby Jake on the way, he was being interviewed by a TV Crew, so I didn’t get to speak to him,
...and the guy in the front of this photo is also a TV star- does anyone know who he is?
And see how ingenious people are- these guys were selling Lemonade for R2
to all the thousands of walkers going by!
Out of the 27 999 people there, I only bumped into one person I knew (besides
my friends who walked with me) being Mike from DM Kisch Inc– the last time I
saw Mike was in the boardroom of his offices, when we were discussing some exciting
business opportunities! Nice to see you Mike!

Jack, Mike and Reg
I traded Rodrigus the Frog with Retha for Jack, Mike and Reg. I thought at first it was just going to be for Jack, but Retha decided to give me a bonus and throw in Mike and Reg too! Cool beans!
We met at the opening of the Tao Day Coaching and Wellness Centre in Johannesburg- that’s the only time Retha had free in her busy schedule. You see, Retha's an ace change agent! (and coach and trainer too). Amid the trading of Rodrigus, there was also the lighting of candles in the Zen garden to bless the centre, and the drawing of archetype cards to see what roles the guests would play in the centre. I drew “The Prince”, which is a leader in training (?) and Rod drew “The Mediator”- so I guess he’ll be negotiating fairness and strategy in the professional and personal lives of those he meets while he travels the world.
So now that I’ve got acquainted with Jack, Mike and Reg, you’ve got the opportunity to get to know them and learn from their experiences. Let me introduce them in a bit more detail:
Jack Carew – “The Mentor”:
- Founder and CEO of Carew International
- Dynamic and innovative sales training consultant for 20 years
- Author of 2 national best sellers – one being “The Mentor”
- Been on more than 110 TV and radio programmes
- Guru in world of Human Resource Development
- Former marine lieutenant colonel
Mike Lipkin – “Fire & Water”:
- Speaker, author, motivator, persuasion coach and President of Environics
- Worked in twenty-two countries with over 1,000,000 people
- Born in the UK and raised in South Africa- now lives in Toronto
- Makes the complex simple, helps people “get it” immediately
- Totally bald
Reg Lascaris – “Fire & Water”:
- South African marketing and advertising mogul
- Africa and Middle East regional director of ad agency group TBWA Worldwide
- Partner in Boekenhoutskloof winery
- Pet obsession is selling South Africa
- Started his ad agency in 1983 out of the boot of a car
So if you trade with me, you’ll get to be mentored by Jack as he shares his secrets of success in sales, business and life. You’ll also get to explore the discoveries about doing business in South Africa that Mike and Reg learnt since 1993, and share in their fears and flaws as they take you into their worlds and minds. And not only will you “meet” them, you’ll get to keep them - on your book shelf!
So would you like to trade with me for Jack, Mike and Reg? If so, send me your offer to onematchstick@gmail.com .

What a weekend!
Yes, you heard me right: Kyle Macdonald of oneredpaperclip has got his house! He has traded his one red paperclip up and now has a house! 503 Main Street, Kipling, Saskatchewan, Canada, Earth. Awesome Kyle! Congratulations!
So for me this is so exciting, because I really believe that if another human being can do something, any other human being can do it too - it’s humanly possible! So that means that it’s definitely possible- and now probable- that I’ll turn my one matchstick into offices! And then I’ll get to help a fellow entrepreneur get wings for his or her dream! All I need now is for South Africa to come on board and help me make this dream come true! So, who’s keen to trade something for my latest item up for trade: Rodrigus the frog?
Talking of Rod, he’s starting to get some great stories to tell. Like on Saturday Gary and my mom Adele took him to the Kyalami Race track for the Ferrari Day! They got to see everything Ferrari, from novice drivers taking their Ferraris for a burn, to the pro’s from the Ferrari Challenge Series who raced around the track.
Here's Rod on a Ferrari, and that's Gary and my Mom in the reflection!
There was one Ferrari that was white- and Mom was disappointed in that, for after all, how can a Ferrari come in any colour other than that brilliant Ferrari red? As cartorque.co.za says in their article about the Ferrari Day: "Ferraris are fast, they are beautiful and they are Italian, which means they have a fair degree of what is fondly known as "temperament". And perhaps they fact that most of them are painted in brilliant red has something to do with it.” I agree.
I would have loved to have been there to hear that unique vvvrooooommmminng roar of those Ferraris as they sped around the track, but I was otherwise engaged in business discussions that will, with some effort, lead to me having the choice to be the one making those vvvrooooommmminng roars in something red ;) Here's a clip of some of the Ferraris- I now have got to get a camera that records sound (I wonder if someone will trade me one for a matchstick? ;)
Gary recently retired, and timed it perfectly so that he could be one of the biggest spectators I know, of the World Cup! He watched every single match that was broadcast over these last 30 days! How’s that for a fan? He’s now thinking of coming out of his early retirement, to do a bit of work, as there’s nothing left to keep him glued to that box anymore… So anyone got a job for Gary (that doesn’t require an office- he’d prefer to work outdoors), let me know and I’ll hook you up with him.
So with that kind of weekend, this week is sure to be an exciting one. Oh, and Gary just said to mention that if anyone has any ideas for Rod’s next adventure, then be sure to add a comment!
Have a great week!

July Fever
Andy and Tracey took him down to Durban to take apart in “July Fever”… and the one horse race that all of South Africa watches! It’s when South Africa’s best thoroughbreds storm round the Greyville Racecourse in the Vodacom Durban July. And the best dressed get to show off their style! We even had a bit of July Fever here in Johannesburg at the Jozi7degrees “a day at the races” event! What fun getting to wear top hats and feathers, and take part in a bet, with proceeds to a charity!
Rodrius had a fab time - he even bet on “Eurovision”, Andy tells me, but his horse didn’t do well... o well, maybe next time Rodrigus you’ll bring home the big winnings!
Tracey looks stunning here, don’t you think?
She’s a new entrepreneur, actually, as well as a beauty, and has organised a Poker Cruise with Andy. Actually they’re both pretty entrepreneurial! Andy is one of the founders of bidorbuy.co.za and talking to him sparked off an idea in my head to do with one matchstick and auctions…I just need to think it through a bit then I’ll share it with you.
Back to Tracey- I love chatting and getting to know people more, fascinating stuff! Tracey is an interior designer and used to be dancer. The Poker Cruise sounds like it was born out of this couples love for water and cruises, and their keen sense of play and fun- they are ace poker players- mixed with a bit of business savvy-ness. It’s one of the first of its kind in South Africa - where you are able to take part in a top notch poker tournament while at sea, touring islands. Sounds like a great way to spend a few days!
Quite a few people have been asking me when I’m going to make my next trade… well all I can say is there are no set rules here for my trading project, and I’ve just been plotting out which offer would be the best to lead me towards trading up for offices! So although you haven’t seen it, there’s been a lot happening behind the scenes. I’d love your input, and keep those questions coming- send them to onematchstick@gmail.com
Rodrigus is now back sitting on top of my PC... and he’s keen on going for another adventure... so if you have a trip planned that Rodrigus could join you on, be sure to let me know on onematchstick@gmail.com
Have a great FRIDAY!

Kiyosaki and me
Robert came to South Africa this week to do a presentation yesterday for, I'd guess, about 1000 people, with all the proceeds going to NOAH's orphans, a charity for Nurturing Orphans of AIDS for Humanity. This charity, and others like Starfish, were formed in response to the epidemic of orphans we have and will have following the AIDS pandemic in the country. Noah and Starfish, you guys are doing great work, keep it up! Robert and his wife Kim also made a donation on the day, so shot to you as well!
See- here I am with Robert.
Unfortunately he was too busy signing books to chat to me, because I would have liked to have thanked him for one line in his book, "Cashflow Quadrants". That line has helped me stick it out in tough times while getting my business off the ground. The line is: “You can quit anytime, so why quit now?" And I would have also liked to have asked him his opinion on this trading project of mine. I wonder what he would have said? Robert, if you read this, do pop me an email , thanks!
Robert and Kim really seemed to like our country- Robert spoke about us being a highly entrepreneurial nation, he commented on the number of people that tried to sell him stuff at the traffic lights! And his recommendation was for us to grow as a nation, we need even more entrepreneurs. So wow, how do we grow even more entrepreneurs here? There are competitions to win funding for the best business plans, plenty of talk shows on the radio about business and entrepreneurs, trainings, and lots of opportunities waiting to be tapped. There are even people trading matchsticks for offices ;)
Talking about trades… been mulling over which offer to accept. Which one would you take, hmmm? Add a comment or send me an email with your suggestions. Or even better yet, send me another offer for Rodrigus (who went away this weekend... I’ll update you later on his adventures!)
Thanks!
