Well, just one tentative offer which looked unusual. It was for a big carpet of some sort by Vernon. He had a look at the carpet earlier in the week, and found that it was a lot dirtier than he thought. He'd left it in the garage and it got wet and mouldy. He organised for it to be cleaned on Friday afternoon, but then let me know today at 10:48 that unfortunately the carpet cleaning was unsuccessful. However, he did say that if I was interested in trading for what can best be described as a "biological experiment in fungi growth", then he's got just the thing for me.
Thanks Vernon, I'll give that experiment a miss. But if anyone would like it, then let me know and I'll get you in touch with Vernon to make a trade.
So I called up Claire, and she was thrilled that I accepted her offer of 1 week or 2 weekends at their cottage in the Magaliesburg. She had a taste of First Sighting recently and thinks it's just a superb wine, so it's a great trade! I’ll be popping over to her place, which it turns out is just down the road from me, to make the trade tomorrow morning. So more info then!

Promote onematchstick
Ok, so some of you have asked and some others of you might like to help promote this little project of mine. So here are some pic’s you can put on your websites. I’ve tried to make it real easy for you- you just need to copy the code in the box under the image you like, and then paste that code in the code of your website at the place you want the pic to appear.
If you have no idea what to do, then just ask someone. I had to find out how to get these boxes with the code to work, so it’s a great learning opportunity!

Sign the petition: Induct Alice Cooper into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
I want to see this happen. Kyle, who had his house warming party for his red paperclip house just a few days ago, said the following on his blog:
"I just checked the Alice Cooper petition. 10953 signatures and going strong. If it hits 22222 signatures by New Years Day I will walk to the printing shop here in Kipling, print the entire thing out, stuff it in a backpack, and proceed to hitch-hike all the way to New York City where the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame offices are located and deliver it in person.
And yes, you can quote me on that."
So what’s this all about? Well, did you know that Alice Cooper is not already in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? And he totally deserves to be there. Now I must admit, before my friend Rohin rags me, I can’t say that I am a big fan of Alice Copper- actually don’t know much of his music. But I do know that he is a cool dude, just from how he participated in Kyle’s adventure of trading his red paperclip for his house. And I’ll take Kyle’s word for it too, seeing as though he’s met the man.
So for being such a good sport, Alice gets my vote to be in the hall of fame. And I’ve already signed the petition- actually my signature was number 1453, and there are now 11390 signatures.
So how about signing the petition too? And let’s get Kyle to print that list of 22222 signatures and go on that hitch hiking trip to New York. So we’ve got until New Years to get the counter to move from 11390 to 22222. That’s 108 days to go. And that’s 10832 signatures to go. Come on! Add yours and tell your friends too!

Spring is here!
I just love summer- I much prefer it to the chill of winter. I really feel the cold, and I need to wear so many layers in winter to just keep warm. And if I’m wearing 5 or more layers, you know it’s friggin’ freezing!
So now you might understand why I enjoy the signs of spring so much! Like the hundred (literally) orange clivia’s that are blossoming in my mom’s garden right now, with the few pink and white cherry blossoms overhanging them. And the sweet smell of jasmine that tickles your nose as you walk past a patch hanging over a wall. And the bright almost illuminous green buds of leaves that are appearing on the trees that have had bare branches all winter. And the black collared barbets who are nesting in tree trunks. And the lucky bean trees with their mass of scarlet flowers.
Have you seen them around? The lucky bean trees? Or otherwise know as the common coral? Or Papilionaceae Erythrina lysistemon? I had to google for that name. And did you know that this tree is a common site in Africa at this time of year? And is also called the Cry Baby Tree? Why I cannot find out. So if you know, please leave us a comment about how it got the name "Cry Baby Tree"! Thanks!

And just the other day Gary and I saw a superb example of one in the middle of the Rivonia shopping district, which Gary managed to catch on my camera as we drove past, and here it is:

Well! I am amazed! “Rhino” bid for and won my crazy Crazy Auction of one matchstick yesterday, and his winning bid was for R51:00! Yip, fifty one buckaroos! Thanks Rhino for being such a sport! I’m waiting for Rhino to reply to my email about delivery of his one matchstick…

Auction starts tomorrow!
My CRAZY crazy auction starts tomorrow. In about 18 hours, actually.
I’m quite keen to see how it goes. Do you think anyone will bid for a matchstick?
Auctions are an interesting means of selling things, I think. Because the buyers get to decide what the item is worth- there’s no way you can decide for them. You can make suggestions with your starting bid amount, but ultimately if there are no bids but lots of views of your auction, then the market is saying that they don’t think your item is worth what you are asking.
So what is one matchstick which is part of a little experiment, worth? What will the “market” say it is worth? It’ll be interesting to see.
If you want to tell me what you think my second one matchstick is worth, then do make a bid tomorrow by clicking here. If you’re just curious like me as to what’s going to happen, then be sure to point your browser here to watch the auction action.

Interviewed on 702
 | Well, this project has got to be officially launched now. Douglas Kruger announced the launch of onematchstick on 702 this morning as he interviewed me! Yip, I got up at 4:00 in the morning to be at the 702 Talk Radio studio by just after 5:00, and we had a great chat about one matchstick. We also spoke a bit about the new name change of our Johannesburg International Airport, and it seemed that quite a few of the listeners agreed with me, that we could do so much more with all the money that goes into changing a name. It's a touchy debate, it seemed, from the callers calling in. |
You see, a matchstick has the potential to light a candle, or a bon fire! That one single match can lead to two very different outcomes. It’s just about applying the inherit potential of the match to the right circumstances, and you can have either candle light, or a huge bonfire that you can’t even walk up close to, it’s so hot!
And that’s like the work I do, facilitating people to access their resources, their inherent matchsticks, and to strike them in the right circumstances, so that they can create bonfires with their lives! Or candle light, if that’s what they choose. But they have the choice and know how and when to strike their matches.
It was an interesting half an hour with Douglas in the studio. I’m always amazed when I’ve been interviewed, at the technology and the number of people behind making a radio show. Douglas had about 4 computer screens open in front of him, lots of buttons and mouse’s (what’s the plural for more than one computer mouse?) and his producer in the room next door. After Douglas’s show was John Robbie’s show, with about 4 other people helping him. We then walked down the hall to the 94.7 Rude Awakening Team, passing Whack-head Simpson on the way (and no, I don’t think he’s any relation of mine, even if we’re both a bit wacky sometimes) and that’s also a big team working on that show!
Anyway, it’s great getting to talk on radio! Thanks Douglas for the opportunity! Douglas has a great Radio personality, and I’ve enjoyed his shows in the past- although I must admit I am not often up at 4:00 in the morning to hear him now that he’s on 702. Douglas is also a terrific public speaker- did you know that he was number 2 in the WORLD for public speaking? And the South African Champion for 2004? He was telling me that he’s just launched his book on public speaking too, so I’ll have to check it out. It's called "50 Ways to Become a Better Speaker".
Well, after that exciting start to my day, it’s back to work now.

Well, it’s my birthday tomorrow. Yip, another year closer to celebrating my 101st birthday- only 69 years to go! That’s one of the things on my list of 101 things to do before I die, you know: “celebrate my 101st Birthday”. I’ve even got it on my 43 things list. Have you heard of 43 things? It’s quite a funky site.
Anyway, so I had a bit of a celebration with a few friends under the trees over a lazy breakfast at Moyo’s at the Zoo Lake today- a great place if you are not in a hurry to go anywhere. Here I am with my cool Aunt, Catherine- see we both had our faces moyo-i-fied :)
I’ve been thinking, and looking at what Kyle did with his one red paperclip… and I think I have one thing missing- well 2 things, actually. And they are: 1) a deadline, and 2) more participants!
So I’ve set the deadline for trading my onematchstick into offices- and seeing as though it’s my birthday, I decided to make it next years b’day- so the 28th August 2007 is d-day for one matchstick! That means I am aiming to do my last trade for an office by 28th August 2007. K?
And then as for participation- well, that’s where you come in. Yes you, reading this right now, how about helping another person’s dream come true? You see, it shouldn’t cost you anything, just a bit of time and energy, maybe. And you can participate in a number of ways:
1. Just add a comment- tell me what you think, cheer me on, tell me I’m crazy! Anything, just add a comment. It’s quite easy, just click here and try it out.
2. Tell everyone you know about onematchstick.co.za- so they can do number 1 above, or number 3 below.
3. Trading is fascinating
Well, this trading thing is sure fascinating me at the moment. I’m amazed at the possibilities it opens! I’ve traded and bartered quite a bit over the years, and especially with getting my business going. My latest trade has really been exciting though (and that’s after the excitement of trading to get the 2 cases of wine up for offer right now).
Mike Gray was taking part in a training I was running for a few people- we were meeting every second Monday night and working through the Wealth Building training I run. It’s a great course, in that it covers all the findings Dr Michael Hall has exposed from his many years of modelling the structure of many millionaires minds, and his research into creating wealth. But I digress- as I do when I start on a topic that captivates me!
So Mike took part in the course, and during the few months of meeting every 2 weeks, he heard about my onematchstick project. A couple of days later- which was a few weeks ago - I got an email from Mike offering me a temporary office at his offices, which is the head office of Uniglobe Travel. And in exchange, I could take his management team through a coaching programme. Well what an offer!!
After going and having a look at the office, and speaking more to Mike about his coaching needs, we agreed that it’s a great Win-Win for both of us, and I moved in! I thought I’d mention it to you when it was all final and confirmed.
And this Thursday just been I had a few friends and my family over to “launch” Inner Coaching’s new Temporary Office. It’s now “home” until I finish trading my onematchstick for my OWN offices, with space to still mentor another fellow start-up entrepreneur! So don’t think that I’m giving up my onematchstick project- no sur-reee-bob! This project is just so much fun – and I don’t give up on ideas with funtential - plus I have a vision of my own offices. So it’s still full speed ahead with trading, and this is a great stepping stone towards that!
So how exciting! Wooohooo! If you’d like to pop by sometime to say hi, just give me a buzz on +27 83 730 2979 to make sure I’m there and not with a client, or doing some work at my home office (still doing a bit at home every now and again) and I’ll make you a cup of coffee, or tea if you’d prefer! Bartholomeu Dias, maritime explorer, left his native Portugal in search of a trade route to the east around the tip of Africa. pays homage to Bartholomeu Dias and his adventure which opened a sea route to the East. First Sighting wines open a new route into the world of wine for their customers.And now First Sighting is part of the onematchstick adventure too, opening a new route into blogging!
I’d say that Nick is a like minded trader- I found out over lunch with him yesterday when I went to make the trade, that he also trades wine with his dentist for his checkups! So trading with me for Jack, Mike and Reg was quite simple for Nick, I think, and the exciting bit is that Nick can now say he’s been blogged! A first for him!
He owns Agulhas Wines, and in the mid 2000's they made wine from about 80 tons of their own grapes- and the First Sighting label was created. Nick traded 2 cases with me- one case of 6 bottles of the Sauvignon Blanc, and another case of 12 bottles of the Shiraz (an extra 6 bottles than he originally offered- BONUS!). The other cultivar (a big wine word for me) is the Chardonnay. What you get:
6 bottles of First Sighting Sauvignon Blanc 2006.
This is a crisp, fresh wine with asparagus, buchu, fig and wild gooseberry flavours. The grapes selected were grown in the Elim region. The vineyards are planted in poor flint soils in the coolest and southernmost vineyards in Africa. Gale-force winds off the sea at Cape Agulhas result in small yields and grapes with intense flavour. The Sauvignon Blanc is a versatile food wine – You can enjoy it with your favourite seafood or pasta dishes, or simply on its own.
12 bottles of First Sighting Shiraz 2004
This wine is characterised by the flavours of red fruits with vanilla oak and ending on a spicy white pepper aftertaste. Selection of vineyards was based upon the vineyard's visibility from a passing ship at sea. Two vineyards were chosen, one in the Darling region and the other in the Agulhas region. The grapes from Darling give us ripe fruit with soft tannins while the Agulhas grapes provide the distinctive cool climate with white pepper aftertaste. The Shiraz was matured in French oak barrels for 14 months. It is a versatile food wine – you can try it with heavy beef or tomato-based dishes. Simply delicious.

He owns Agulhas Wines, and in the mid 2000's they made wine from about 80 tons of their own grapes- and the First Sighting label was created. Nick traded 2 cases with me- one case of 6 bottles of the Sauvignon Blanc, and another case of 12 bottles of the Shiraz (an extra 6 bottles than he originally offered- BONUS!). The other cultivar (a big wine word for me) is the Chardonnay. Hi Telana,
I would like to offer 1 week or 2 weekends at our cottage in the Magaliesburg. It sleeps 5, although small but is fully equipped (gas no electricity). It is set in the Utopia nature reserve 1.5 hours from JHB and is a very tranquil peaceful place with lovely walks, 2 pools, tennis courts a restaurant and putt putt!
Attached is a pic – it looks similar to this but our pics are stuck on my camera! When I have them I will forward to you.

What exactly are you doing, Telana? How does it work?
This seems to be the number one question right now. So let me try explain….
I am trading one matchstick up for offices. How it works is I started with a matchstick that I had lying around at home, waiting for me to light one of my many candles (yes, I like candle light).
So Nikki offered me a pen for my matchstick, so I traded with her.
Then I swapped the pen with Megan for her fluffy frog (who is called Rodrigus, and he likes to travel -you can see his adventures here).
Then Retha offered to look after Rodrigus and in exchange she gave me 2 books.
Nick then traded 2 cases of his First Sighting Wine with me for the 2 books. And so it went...
So you can see, each time I trade, I am aiming to trade up in value and will keep trading up until my last trade will be with whatever I have at that time, with some fun-loving person for offices.
