The shoes have gone!
And it's not the only place that I have seen shoes hanging on a line... last Friday I went to Rustenburg to the Platinum Mines for a big project I am doing there, and on the way I passed Diepsloot and saw these shoes on a line:
So there must be a reason people throw shoes up there to hang for ages until some force takes them down again.
Anyways... on my way back from Rustenburg, I was behind this caravan for a bit:
and notice what he does not do! (you might have to click on the photo to get a larger version to read it). And he meant it- he never budged one bit! lol!
Have a fab week!

My first movie!
Do you know that he has been taken to China towards the end of last year? He's even been to a copper mine in Chile! And he came with me on my trip to the UK: to London, Dunstanburgh Castle, met the Town Hall Keeper of Berwick, and made a new friend Paul. He also travelled again with Alix and me to the Portuguese Island.
Check out his adventures on his blog, and if you want to take him travelling, just let me know- I'm his official Travel Planner!
On the trip down to Durban for the cruise, we came across the most trucks we have ever seen. And it's my first attempt at a movie! Check it out here:
What do you think? Am I any good?

I've got another offer!
So what will you offer me for the holiday? Or for the bottle of Pisco if I traded the holiday for it?
Let me know by email or call or sms on +27 83 730 2979 or skype on telanas or ICQ on 102-882-611! Or you can leave a comment here.

Who’s up for adventure?
Well, I was reading more about his wine here. If First Sighting goes well with Adventure, then an adventure must be born....
And that adventure is: Why not go visit the Winery down in the Cape between Elim and Cape Agulhas? I’ve added it to my list of places to visit. It’s a place to go to, just so you can say you’ve been to the southern most wineyard in Africa, and had a fine glass of adventure to taste the terroir (another big wine word) where it is tangible, and experience the spirit of discovery.
And it’s only 9km from the sea! (directions are easy) I know the sea there is lovely, I’ve travelled passed there, not knowing about Agulhas Wines then.
Plus it gives you the chance to say: “Hey, there it is! My first sighting of First Sighting!” That’s a saying worth saying at least once, don’t you think?
So let’s see if we can get a whole bunch of people to go there for an adventurous taste of First Sighting- and be sure to say that you heard about the wine from onematchstick- that way when the message gets back to Nick, he can see how being blogged can be fun- and make him famous! Let's see if we can create a message that goes from this blog, down to the winery, then all the way back to Nick in Johannesburg!
Be sure to keep me in the loop about your adventure!

I'm a blogjockey now!
Yip, just started a blog on the 5FM blogjockey site, so now I’m a blogjockey too! I’m still trying to find out about these shoes, and thought that maybe the 5FM community will be able to help. Check out the blog here.
And I didn’t get to trade up the Holiday by Christmas :( . So it’ll just have to happen neeeext year then! Let the offers start rolling in!

I've got an offer for the Holiday!
He showed me a box full of 29 Juvio training CD’s – all training on how to use computers more efficiently! They cover topics like the internet, and software, to maintenance and hardware too! They even touch on networking and peripherals and look like a super set of training CD’s.
... mmmm, so would they be a good trade up? what do you think?
Who else would like a holiday in Utopia? Make me an offer and let's see what happens... All I want for Christmas is to make my next trade.

Mystery Shoes grow in numbers
So- anyone going own up for this third pair? And I'm now wondering if there will be a fourth pair at some point... hmmm... the mystery continues.
Who’s shoes are these?
I made a new friend last week- Simon :) And as it's such a small world: it turns out he lives a block away from me when he's in South Africa, but has been living all over the world for the last 10 years or more. So during his stay here last week, we were on our way back from joining a group of friends to see Black Mamba at the Theatre on the Square- which, by the way, is very funny and worth seeing! - and I pointed out these shoes hanging on the telephone line at the intersection of Summit Road and Coleraine Road, Bryanston.
Now, here's the puzzle. I got back from my stint in Australia 6 years ago- 2000- and one of the first things I remember noticing, besides the number of new shopping centres that had sprouted up all over the show, was the one pair of shoes hanging here in this intersection. Simon reckons though that the pair of shoes was there 15 years ago! No ways I say! I was here in Jo'burg 15 years ago and don't remember the shoes. So can you help settle this little debate?
And it gets more interesting- because I went passed and took a photo of THE pair of shoes last Wednesday... here it is:
... and then on Thursday I noticed a second pair of shoes that had just been thrown up there... here they are:
So I know that the second pair have been there for a few days... We're more keen to know when the first pair arrived at their home? And does anyone know why they are there? What's with these shoes?
Leave a comment here with when you first saw these shoes, and anything you know about them! Please! Otherwise Simon and I will be debating this for ages...
Thanks a lot!

Christmas Adverts already!
Well, right now all I want for Christmas is to trade up the Holiday in Utopia for something. There have been a few rumours of possible offers, none concrete enough to share with you yet. So I'm holding thumbs that some offers will come in sometime soon... I am learning that patience is a key part to this game!
I've also had 2 different people comment to me in the last few days about how this trading is all about perceived value:- How something that one person perceives at un-valuable might be valuable to another person. Value in an experience or an object is purely subjective.
So do you have something you would offer me that you don't find valuable anymore, that if you could get a holiday in exchange for it, that it would be well worth the swap to you? Anything? If it makes it easier to make an offer, know that you can retract the offer anytime before the actual exchange is made, and that your offer might not be the one I choose- because after all, I'll be deciding on which offer will give me the most leverage later on...
So how creative can you be? Make me an offer! And allow me the opportunity to perceive what value I might see in it!
Thanks!

2 more drawings
And here's mine:
I'm going to drop them off tomorrow!

1000 drawings
And I'm blogging again! Wohoo!
Funny thing is I've missed blogging- I didn't realise how much I actually enjoy it till I haven't been able to. How cliché- "you don't know what you've got until you lose it" kinda thing. Mmmm.
So the UK was superb! I had a great time, it was a lot of travelling and seeing old friends and family that I haven't seen in years, but what fun! And we drove a lot, and there's no better place I find to do some serious thinking about nothing much and everything, than when you are a passenger in some form of transport- a car, a bus or a train preferably. Flying is a time for watching movies…
Rodrigus the Frog joined me, and and we’ve started blogging here about the places we went to and the people we met, like I've got to introduce you to the T.H.K . (that's Town Hall Keeper) of Berwick-Upon-Tweed!
When I got back I had an email waiting for me about a very exciting project- and the cut off date is only a few days away! And as of yesterday they were 600 away from their target.
1000drawings is asking for people to donate drawings to them that will be sold to raise money for a charity called Paballo, which feeds homeless people and provides them with basic medical care.
So will there be a drawing from you??
I'm going to do one drawing using a matchstick of some kind, and go drop it off at the drop-off point, being King James advertising agency, Hutton Court (first floor, north wing) , Jan Smuts Avenue, Hyde Park, Johannesburg by the 1st November. Keen to join me?? You can see some of the art that has been delivered already here. And let me know if you do send in a drawing!
Cheers

United Kingdom
You see, I am in the UK for a whirlwind visit, and had so much to do before I left Jozie last Friday for Heathrow. I've come over with my Mom, specifically to see my brother and his wife for a family occassion! And finally found some access to the net...
Today we've explored Manchester where my brother lives, and what a vibey city it is! Did you know that they are trying to make the entire city Internet friendly, so you could just wi-fi your way around anywhere, anytime? even in a park? I'm not sure if "wi-fi" is a word, but you know what I mean.
We are in York right now, spent some time walking around and in the Cathedral- I'll have to show you some photo's later! Rodrigus came along for the trip too, so I'm sure there will be stories on his blog when we get a chance to upload some pics for a bit!
Tomorrow we're off to Berwick-Upon-Tweed for the family occasion.
While I'm here I'm hoping to spread the word about one matchstick ... got lots of friends to meet up with and get them trading with me... Wouldn't it be cool if I traded the 'Holiday in Utopia' while I am here? mmmmm
Something else that has been intersting, is Nina Simone has been following me around... seriously! I have heard her singing all over the show: on the airplane, in the restaurants, in the hostel we're at tonight, on the radio, on my brothers CD, in CD shops as I pass by ... not that I'm complaining though- she's brilliant! Escpecially her song "Feeling good"...
Well better go, I'm running out of internet time

A Holiday in Utopia
Imagine it...
A tranquil setting... Let's say on a patio like this:
Where you are sitting with a chilled glass of your favourite drink in one hand, stretched out legs, and you can feel the wire chair under the soft cushion you're sitting on... and as you look out on a view like this...
...You can hear a crested barbet being very vocal, with it's long trill "trrrrrrrr" call... and as you look around for it, you notice some mousebirds with their long tails playing in the nearby tree... Sitting next to you are four of your favourite people in the world, and one of them comments on how relaxed they feel after the stroll you all just got back from, where you ambled along the nearby river after exploring a bit of the nature reserve. You comment on what a lovely sighting of bucks you had, so close to you on the walk.
As you chew on a piece of salty biltong, a suggestion is made to have a friendly game of tennis in the morning, while another suggestion is to just laze around the pool for a bit...
The quiet is disturbed briefly by the bark of a baboon as the troop settles down nearby. As your drink comes to an end, you get up to get another, and start to think about lighting the braai...
Sound like Utopia? Like just what you need? Even if it were for a few days?
Well, here's your chance to have a whole week, or 2 weekends like this for you and 4 of your favourite people! I traded the 2 cases of First Sighting Wine this morning with Claire and her husband, Dave, for a Holiday in Utopia.
I popped over to their place and was greeted by their 2 inquisitive dogs at the gate. Max, their 2 year old son was running around, playing with a puzzle and then the dogs and then Dave... So in between we got to talk a bit about Utopia and it really sounds like a superb place for a quiet, relaxing weekend in the bush! I also found out that Claire owns 4 chickens, which she's very fond of!
Here we are, Claire, Dave and me, making the trade.
So, if you make me an offer, you could have a Holiday in Utopia! Here is the package deal:
Utopia is ideal for the hiker, mountaineer, or those just seeking a chilled back to nature holiday. It is located in the foothills of the Magaliesberg range, in the North West Province of South Africa. These mountains are said to the second oldest mountain range in the world! Utopia is in a Malaria free zone and gets really warm- up to 45 degrees Celsius in Summer!
You get:
- 2 weekends (Friday to Sunday) OR 1 week (Monday to Friday)
- Self catering accommodation in an A-framed thatch chalet for 5 people
- Fully equipped, 1 double bed and a single bed in the upstairs room, and 2 single rooms downstairs, bathroom, lounge, kitchen, private patio and braai facilities. All linen except for towels and sheets is supplied.
- No electricity but there is gas amenities, which include hot running water, gas stove and fridge, and paraffin lamps (so not a place for hairdryers!)
- The entire resort is fenced with a security guard on duty 24 hours a day.
- Bird watching - 133 bird species have been spotted so far
- Splashing in the swimming pool
- Tennis
- Walking around the 117 hectare resort on it's many paths and along the river- a full round trip could take you three hours and you should watch out for snakes and scorpions
- Mountain biking (just bring your own bike)
- Watching the rugby at the bar with the communal satellite TV
- Eating at the restaurant
- Playing Mini Golf
- Shop for last minute essentials
- Kiddies playground to bring out the child in you! Or just keep the children entertained.
- Mountain Sanctuary Park next door for abseiling or mountain biking
- Buffelspoort Dam offers fishing and boating
- Sparkling Waters Hotel and Spa, for everything from massages to horse rides
to paintball shooting - Hartebeespoort Dam (50 kms away) with it's Welwitchia Craft Market
- Krugersdorp Game Reserve (50 km away)
- Rustenburg to look at a Platinum Mine (80 km away)
- Sterkfontein Caves (50 km away)
- Sun City (90 km away), for a spot of entertainment or golf
- Pilansburg game Reserve(90 kms away) which is home to "The Big Five"
- Reiki Masters in the area, if you're into that kind of thing- it's one of the highest energy vortex places on earth, apparently!
Dates for your Utopia holiday are subject to availability – Claire and Dave just need a few weeks notice.
NOTE: Photo's and some info courtesy of Jenny at http://utopia1.freeservers.com/
So send me your offers of what you'd swap for this Holiday in Utopia! You can even get together with 4 of your favourite people and see what you can come up with together to trade for this holiday! You'll get me on my email onematchstick@gmail.com or my cell +27 83 730 2979.

12:12 today offers closed.
Well, just one tentative offer which looked unusual. It was for a big carpet of some sort by Vernon. He had a look at the carpet earlier in the week, and found that it was a lot dirtier than he thought. He'd left it in the garage and it got wet and mouldy. He organised for it to be cleaned on Friday afternoon, but then let me know today at 10:48 that unfortunately the carpet cleaning was unsuccessful. However, he did say that if I was interested in trading for what can best be described as a "biological experiment in fungi growth", then he's got just the thing for me.
Thanks Vernon, I'll give that experiment a miss. But if anyone would like it, then let me know and I'll get you in touch with Vernon to make a trade.
So I called up Claire, and she was thrilled that I accepted her offer of 1 week or 2 weekends at their cottage in the Magaliesburg. She had a taste of First Sighting recently and thinks it's just a superb wine, so it's a great trade! I’ll be popping over to her place, which it turns out is just down the road from me, to make the trade tomorrow morning. So more info then!
If you're keen for a bit of a holiday then- start thinking of what you'd like to trade for it! I'm accepting offers!
Exciting stuff!

Promote onematchstick
If you have no idea what to do, then just ask someone. I had to find out how to get these boxes with the code to work, so it’s a great learning opportunity!
And thanks so much for helping promote this project- your support is really appreciated! So here are your options: (and by the way, the images won't appear with a grey box around them- that's just part of my new look and feel on this blog. What do you think about how it looks now?)

Sign the petition: Induct Alice Cooper into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
"I just checked the Alice Cooper petition. 10953 signatures and going strong. If it hits 22222 signatures by New Years Day I will walk to the printing shop here in Kipling, print the entire thing out, stuff it in a backpack, and proceed to hitch-hike all the way to New York City where the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame offices are located and deliver it in person.
And yes, you can quote me on that."
So what’s this all about? Well, did you know that Alice Cooper is not already in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? And he totally deserves to be there. Now I must admit, before my friend Rohin rags me, I can’t say that I am a big fan of Alice Copper- actually don’t know much of his music. But I do know that he is a cool dude, just from how he participated in Kyle’s adventure of trading his red paperclip for his house. And I’ll take Kyle’s word for it too, seeing as though he’s met the man.
So for being such a good sport, Alice gets my vote to be in the hall of fame. And I’ve already signed the petition- actually my signature was number 1453, and there are now 11390 signatures.
So how about signing the petition too? And let’s get Kyle to print that list of 22222 signatures and go on that hitch hiking trip to New York. So we’ve got until New Years to get the counter to move from 11390 to 22222. That’s 108 days to go. And that’s 10832 signatures to go. Come on! Add yours and tell your friends too!
Thanks!
Telana
PS- I'll be closing accepting of offers for 2 case of First Sighting this Saturday at 12:12. So be sure to sms me on +27 83 7302979 or send me an emailon onematchstick@gmail.com before then if you want to trade with me for the wine!
